May 2017 Reading Recap

It’s time for monthly reading recap. This month I read more books than I expected, only one more though. I win a Goodreads giveaway and the book came in the middle of May so I feel like I should read and reviewed it as soon as possible. Though I only ended up writing a very short review of that book on Goodreads. Well then, without further a do, let’s continue to this month reading recap. These are all the books I read on May 2017:

1) Good Ol’ Charlie  Brown by Charles M. Schulz (3)

I got this book when I visited Big Bad Wolf (BBW) Jakarta this year. For you who don’t know what BBW is, it’s a huge book fair in Southeast Asia cuntries. The books were majorly taken from BookXcess as a book clearence sales. This is the second times they held it in Jakarta, and I have visited both times.
This book brings back a lot of good memory, it feels so nostalgic. Though to be honest I find some story not as funny as I remember it. I think it’s because my humor sense has changed through the years. Nevertheless, it’s still a very pleasant reading and I enjoy it.

Purchase Good Ol’ Charlie Brown from: Bookdepository.

2) Perbudakan Seksual (Sexual Slavery) by Anna Mariana (4)

This book is so hard to read and so hard to reviewed. It’s hard to read not because I don’t like this book, but because the topic of this book is heavy and grim. I have to stop from moment to moment just to take a breath and think. As for why is this book is hard to reviewed, it’s because I want to do this book justice. I honestly think that everyone in Indonesia needs to read this book at least once in their lives. Up until now, the majority of Indonesian don’t really wants to open up about this topic, they consider it as something taboo. But as for me, I honestly think we should talk about it more so that we can really learned from it and prevent those horrible things from happening again.

Purchase Perbudakan Seksual from: Marjin Kiri Publisher (Indonesia only)

3) City of Saints and Thieves by Natalie C. Anderson (4.5)

Dear YA authors, please make more books like City of Saints and Thieves. I used this term a lot when I talk about this book, but really, this book feels like a breath of fresh air in YA genre. This book is not perfect and there are still some YA tropes that I kind of wish won’t be used by the authors, but I really like this book and I honestly think it’s one of the most well-written YA mystery and thriller I’ve ever read.

Purchase City of Saints and Thieves from: Bookdepository.

4) The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Jack Kelly (2)

I bought this book three years ago when I visited a used book stall in Singapore for a light read on the road. Though at the end, I’ve never got a chance to read this book because my schedule in Singapore was so thight. But this year one of the prompt from this year Pop Sugar Reading Challenge is a book I got from used book sale so I think it’s time for me to read this book. For me this book is just kind of meh. It’s not bad but it’s not good enough for me. There’s one story that I kind of like but the other stories in this book still outweighed the good one.

Purchase The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from: Amazon.

5) A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas (4.8)

I have to be honest and said that this is not Maas’ best book and it’s not the best book in the trilogy. For me the best book in this trilogy  is still ACOMAF. That being said I love this book. Yes, it has many flaws if you see it only as the last book in Feyre’s arc trilogy. BUT, if like me, you see ACOWAR as a book which starts the stories for upcoming books in ACOTAR universe, then this book really does this job. I love the new characters, my ultimate ship almost sail, my lowkey ship looks like they’re going to sail too, the character developments is good, my otp kiss, all is pretty good. I might write the full review after I got a chance to reread this book again.

Purchase A Court of Wings and Ruin from: Bookdepository.

6) The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan (4.5)

Of all the things that Rick Riordan has done, I never thought he could make me love a magic arrow who gives prophecy in shakespearan English. This book is such a great sequel to The Hidden Oracle and I adore the Arrow of Dodona. Though I have to admit that I found The Hidden Oracle a bit more funny than this one. Just like in The Hidden Oracle the one point that really make this book shines and stood up among other Riordan series is Apollo character development’s arc and his personality.

I also do a reread of The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympian #1) by Rick Riordan. One character from this book is coming back at the end of The Dark Prophecy and I can’t wait to see them helping Apollo in the third installment of Trials of Apollo series.

Purchase The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan on Bookdepository.

7) Elyora by Jodi Cleghorn (2)

Remember about that book I win from Goodreads giveaway? This book is that book.  Elyora really has a good premise and I was actually excited when I know I won. But the pace of this book is too fast and the writings make it hard for me to distinguished each narratives. Everything feel so rushed that I feel like I’m reading a summary instead of the book itself. Also, I think the reasoning behind some characters actions are forced and not strong enough. There’s also a smut scene in this book, which actually quite surprised me. I enjoy that scene, not gonna lie, but I really don’t think that it was necessary for the author to described that part in such details. If only the author focused more on developing the mystery part rather than that smut scene, maybe this book could be better.

Purchase Elyora by Jodi Cleghorn on Amazon.

I also managed to fit some of them into four prompts of Pop Sugar Reading Challenge this year:

1. The Lightning Thief - A book you’ve read before that never fails to make you smile

2. The Dark Prophecy - A book written by someone you admire

3. City of Saints and Thieves - A book about an immigrant or a refugee

4. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - A book you got from used book sale

And that’s it. Those are all the books I read in May. I’m glad that I managed to read more than 5 books this month because that means I’m done with my book hangover. Though I have to admit I’m quite surprised that I don’t have any book hangover after I finished ACOWAR. I have planned all the books I want to read in June, some of them are ARCs I got from Net Galley, and I’m so excited. Wish me luck!
